The hot embrace of the earth: the power of natural peat

At first glance, it may look like ordinary clay. But peat, which is used in the spa industry to treat the body and mind, has hundreds of years of natural development and a power that nothing artificial can replace. It is born from plants, mosses and herbs that have been deposited in wetlands for centuries, gradually decomposing and transforming into a natural treasure - peloid. Today, it helps where modern life leaves its traces - in back, joint and muscle pain, as well as in general exhaustion.

A touch of nature in spa form
Peloid therapy, i.e. treatment with natural peat, is one of the rarest spa treatments. It is not just the physical action of heat, but a combination of natural substances and minerals that penetrate deep into the tissues and promote the regeneration of the body. Peat can retain heat longer than conventional wraps and therefore has a more intense and gentle effect at the same time.

Each layer of peat is different - it contains organic acids, minerals and trace elements that have anti-inflammatory effects and promote metabolism. When mixed with water and heated, it literally becomes a living poultice that works wonders for the musculoskeletal system and skin.

The journey from Trebon to your back
The peat we use in our Luhačovice spa houses is imported from the Slatine Spa in Třeboň - a place with a long tradition of peloid mining and processing. The peat bogs there are strictly protected and therefore can only be mined in limited quantities. Each batch undergoes quality control to preserve its natural purity and healing potential.

On arrival in Luhačovice, the peat is stored in cool, dry conditions, sealed in barrels to preserve all its properties. In this form, it looks like a loose mixture - dark, earthy, unobtrusive. The real magic happens at the moment of preparation.

A small ritual that has great power

Prior to application, the peat is transferred to a mixing boiler where it is diluted with water as required. The spa staff ensures that a perfectly smooth mixture of the appropriate consistency is created. It is then heated to a comfortable 42 °C - the temperature at which its healing effects are activated.

It is then applied to the body in the form of a natural peat wrap - it can be small (for example, a local treatment of the knees or shoulders) or large (for example, the entire back or spine). The spa doctor decides exactly where the wrap is applied, depending on the client's health and needs.

The heat of the peat penetrates deep into the tissues, improves blood circulation, relaxes muscles, and relieves pain and tension. Over the course of twenty minutes, the body gradually surrenders to the earth - and while the muscles relax, the mind relaxes. The treatment is followed by a shower and the recommended rest period to allow the effects to wear off.

A power that not everyone can afford
Working with natural peat is challenging - logistically, financially and technologically. It requires strict storage conditions, precise dosing, hygienic processing and professional disposal of the used mixture. That is why it is not often encountered in the spa industry.

In Luhačovice, this procedure is one of the real specialties. However, in the MIRAMARE spa hotels you can be pampered with a genuine peat wrap prepared according to the traditional procedure, where a mixture of Třeboň peat is carefully heated and applied precisely to release tension from the body and return its lightness.

Not every spa can afford to offer genuine peat therapy - not only because of the price of the raw material, but also because of the expertise required in its preparation. That makes the experience here all the more special. Once you have tasted the warmth of the earth slowly spreading through your body, you will understand why peloid therapy is considered the most natural and luxurious form of regeneration you can indulge in.

For whom is peloid therapy suitable

Doctors recommend peat wraps especially for people with back pain, arthritis, stiff joints, rheumatism or chronic inflammation of the musculoskeletal system. They also help with recovery after injuries and surgeries, as well as with long-term stress and fatigue. The heat not only affects the muscles, but also the nervous system - it harmonises and calms.

Many clients describe the experience as a "hot hug feeling", where the earthy smell of the peat mixes with the stillness and warmth that flows through the body. This is also why peloid therapy becomes not only a treatment, but also a personal ritual of regeneration.

Nature as the best therapist
At a time when most therapeutic methods rely on machines and chemicals, a return to natural sources has a special charm. Peat is proof that what was created slowly also has lasting power. Twenty minutes is all it takes for earth, water, heat and time to come together. A peat wrap is no ordinary procedure - it is a moment when everything becomes quiet and one feels oneself again. The natural warmth permeates the body, the earthy scent mingles with the silence and you realise that it is in the simplicity of nature that the most effective healing lies. At MIRAMARE hotels in Luhačovice you can surrender to this power, knowing that you are in the care of experts who know how to turn tradition into an experience.
