Physiotherapist on the reality of today's pain: we are not lazy, we are exhausted

Back pain, fatigue and long-term tension plague most people today, but few people know exactly why they arise and how to really work with them. Modern physiotherapy has long since ceased to be about pain 'straightening', but about understanding the body and changing everyday habits that determine our health more than we realise.

In a spa, the physiotherapist has more time with the patient and can therefore discover the real cause of the problem - not just its manifestation. This is why the spa approach is often more effective, more comprehensive and, for many people, surprisingly gentle.

In the following interview, experienced spa physiotherapist Mgr. Petr Mikulec, an experienced physiotherapist with many years of experience, explains what people most often don't know about their bodies, what really works and how small changes can significantly alter how we feel every day.

Interview with Mgr. Petr Mikulc

How to know if you have to go to physiotherapy? A simple rule of thumb.

What exactly does physiotherapy entail during a treatment stay? How does it differ from regular rehabilitation? Physiotherapy during a treatment stay is more comprehensive. We have more time with each patient so we can explain in detail what is going on in the body, where the problem is and how to work with it. It's not just about "getting the job done" but about changing habits, attitudes and movement patterns. We focus on the whole body, not just the diagnosis. This includes manual therapy, individual exercises, education and modern equipment. The patient goes home not only with improvement, but with a clear plan for the future.
Is pain necessary in physiotherapy, or is there a more subtle way? Physiotherapy does not have to hurt. Nowadays, the "rough straightening" is being abandoned. We work with soft techniques and functional exercises with respect for the body. Sometimes there may be discomfort (e.g. with blockages or trigger points), but pain is not the goal of therapy. Therapy is meant to be collaborative, not distressing.
When does it make sense to go to a physiotherapist and when can a person do it at home? If the pain lasts for several days, returns or limits normal functioning, it is advisable to seek a specialist. Also for back pain, after injuries or with balance problems. Short compensatory exercises or stretches can be done at home, but repeated or intense problems require a professional examination.
Which information from the patient is most important? It is important to know what hurts, for how long and when the pain gets worse. Also, previous injuries, surgeries, work schedule, movement during the day, sleep quality and load management. The body responds to the whole lifestyle, not just one event.
What difficulties do you encounter most often? Are people lazier today? The most common are back pain, arthritis, overload from computer work, post-traumatic conditions and balance disorders in the elderly. People are not necessarily lazier - they have less time and more stress. Movement often comes into play only when pain sets in.
Do popular aids like massage guns, rollers or acupressure pads help? They can help, but they are not a panacea. Guns relieve tension, rollers promote mobility and pads provide short-term relief. But they are no substitute for diagnosis or regular movement. If you don't know the cause of your pain, you can hurt yourself.
Why does it make sense to learn Nordic Walking under the guidance of a professional? Proper technique engages the upper body, improves posture and increases energy expenditure by up to 40% compared to normal walking. Without proper technique, the poles serve only as a support. Under the guidance of a physiotherapist, one learns the correct bounce, rhythm and posture.
What modern techniques do spas offer today? Modern methods include VR Medical (virtual reality for rehabilitation) and the high-powered MLS laser. Virtual reality motivates and precisely controls movement, while the laser quickly reduces pain and promotes healing. These methods complement conventional physiotherapy and speed up the return to normal life.
What small change can make the biggest difference? Regular short daily movement. Just 10-15 minutes of mobilisation, stretching or brisk walking. The body loves regularity and will reward you with less pain and better energy.

What to do in the end?

Physiotherapy is constantly evolving and so is our view of caring for a body that is overworked, tired or sore. Recent years have brought not only physical debilitation, but also mental fatigue and stress, which take a significant toll on the body.

Quality rehabilitation and a personal approach are more important than ever.

As Mgr. Petr Mikulec:
"Think of your body as a partner, not as a machine that has to endure everything. Even a small change can make a big difference every day."

Solid health, more energy and most importantly - feel good in your own body.
