What you should know about DIABETES MELLITUS

Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes, is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. Diabetes is on the rise not only in the world but also in the Czech Republic. Whereas half a century ago, approximately 2% of the population suffered from diabetes, today one in ten people is diagnosed with the disease. It is estimated that a further 2% of the population is completely unaware of their disease, and up to 5% of the population is in the prediabetes phase, i.e. in a risk state before the full development of the disease. During their lifetime, approximately one third of the Czech population will develop diabetes.¹ Inadequate treatment or poor control of diabetes can lead to serious complications such as cardiovascular disease, nerve damage and kidney failure.

Causes of the increase in this disease of civilization

The number of diabetics is increasing due to an unhealthy lifestyle, excessive consumption of industrially processed foods and lack of exercise. Stress and poor quality sleep adversely affect insulin sensitivity, while an ageing population and genetic predispositions increase the risk of developing the disease. In addition, the obesity epidemic is closely linked to type 2 diabetes, which affects increasingly younger age groups. These factors combine to make diabetes one of the most prevalent diseases of civilisation today.

Can the situation still be saved?

The key to preventing diabetes in the first place is a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet rich in fibre, healthy fats and proteins, which limits excessive consumption of sugars and refined carbohydrates, is essential. Regular physical activity - whether walking, swimming or exercising - helps maintain proper blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity. Quality sleep and stress management are also important, as prolonged elevated levels of stress hormones can lead to insulin resistance. If you have a family history of diabetes or are overweight, it is advisable to monitor your blood sugar levels regularly and consult a doctor at the first sign of problems.
